Chelate-Induced Phytoextraction of Experimentally Metal Polluted Soil, with Thlaspi Caerulescens

چکیده
Heavy metal contamination of soils has become a serious problem in industrial or agricultural areas. Soils polluted with heavy metals pose a significant health risk to humans as well as plants and animals, often requiring soil remediation practices. Synthetic chelates such as ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) have been shown to enhance phytoextraction of some heavy metals from contaminated soil. In the present study, the effect of EDTA on the uptake of Pb, Zn, Cr and Cu by Thlaspi caerulescens and the toxic effects of EDTA additions on plants were examined. Application of EDTA was effective in accumulation of studied metals in the shoots and decreased metal concentrations in soil.

Impact of metal pollution and Thlaspi caerulescens growth on soil microbial communities.
Soil microorganisms drive critical functions in plant-soil systems. As such, various microbial properties have been proposed as indicators of soil functioning, making them potentially useful in evaluating the recovery of polluted soils via phytoremediation strategies. To evaluate microbial responses to metal phytoextraction using hyperaccumulators, a microcosm experiment was carried out to stud...

متن کاملChanges in soil biological activities under reduced soil pH during Thlaspi caerulescens phytoextraction
Phytoextraction of soil Cd and Zn may require reduction in soil pH in order to achieve high metal uptake. Reducing the pH of high metal soil, however, could negatively affect soil ecosystem function and health. The objectives of this study were to characterize the quantitative causal relationship between pH and soil biological activities in two Zn and Cd contaminated soils and to investigate th...
متن کاملEffects of metal phytoextraction practices on the indigenous community of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi at a metal-contaminated landfill.
Phytoextraction involves use of plants to remove toxic metals from soil. We examined the effects of phytoextraction practices with three plant species (Silene vulgaris, Thlaspi caerulescens, and Zea mays) and a factorial variation of soil amendments (either an ammonium or nitrate source of nitrogen and the presence or absence of an elemental sulfur supplement) on arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fun...
